How to Use Castor Oil for Face, Skin, and Hair

how to use castor oil for face skin and hair

Castor oil is a very thick and moisturizing oil made by pressing the seeds of castor plant. It originates from Central Africa although it has been used all over the world for various purposes including but not limited to healing skin lesions, relieving constipation, and even inducing childbirth (?!). Besides these traditional uses, castor oil is also gaining popularity as a DIY skin, face and hair product and is something you should include in your beauty pantry.

Using castor oil for your face and skin

Castor oil is anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, highly moisturizing and has a low comedogenic rating (it is unlikely to clog pores), making it a great product to treat acne and other skin problems with. Here are some ways you can use castor oil for your face:

As a face cleanser with the oil cleansing method

Castor oil is featured in the oil cleansing method as the base oil and used in conjunction with lighter oils such as jojoba oil. This method uses the cleansing and purging properties of castor oil to dissolve excess sebum and make skin clearer.

As a body moisturizer

Castor oil contains a high concentration of fatty acids that are easily absorbed into the skin. Using a tiny amount of oil on a cotton ball, lightly coat your skin and let it absorb for a while before you shower. Castor oil removes those rough dry patches, while hydrating your skin.

As a nighttime face moisturizer

Some people use it as a nighttime facial moisturizer too, but I find it it a little too thick for my liking so I use jojoba oil instead. If you’d like to try this though, make sure you use only one or two drops. Otherwise, your face is going to get really oily.

Wrinkles and stretch marks

Some ladies have had success with using castor oils to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and get rid of stretch marks. These are huge claims and unfortunately I do not have any experience with either. If you have a bottle of castor oil lying around somewhere, it might be worth a try.

Using castor oil for hair

Can castor oil help hair grow faster?

Castor oil supposedly promotes hair and lash growth, helping you growing thicker and longer hair and eyelashes. While there hasn’t been any research on this, some ladies have had great results with using castor oil for their hair. For example, Amanda from Amanda’s Beauty Secrets found that her hair grew three times longer (3 cm with castor oil vs 1 cm without castor oil over a month) when she applied the oil to her hair. You can watch her video and explanation of her whole process here:

Bald patches, hair loss and itchy scalp?

Castor oil has anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties. These wonderful benefits may help clear up scalp infections that may be causing bald patches, hair loss, or itchy scalp.

Thickens, shines and reduces split ends

If you have dry, frizzy hair, it might be worth applying castor oil to your hair after shampooing and conditioning. The oil should give your hair a thicker appearance and a healthy shine.

Where to get castor oil

Depending on where you live, you may be able to find this in your local supermarket in the health or beauty section. It’s also easily available online on Amazon and iHerb and at (usually) lower than retail store prices. I usually get Now Food’s Pure Castor Oil
